X-Men: Marauders Brings Back A Powerful Mutant Ally | CBR

$

WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Marauders #2, by Gerry Duggan, Matteo Lolli, Federico Blee, VC's Cory Petit and Tom Muller, on sale now.

A big part of the premise and the appeal behind Marauders is watching the mutant heroes gallivant about the high seas of the world and getting into swashbuckling adventures. Since team leader Kitty Pryde is incapable of entering the mutant nation Krakoa through the portals that work for the rest of the X-Men, she's resolved to travel the world at save other mutants who've been kept from traveling to the island on their own.

However, all of that could change with the return of a familiar face: Gateway. In Marauders #2, the teleporting mutant takes the team halfway around the world at a moment's notice on the order of Emma Frost, the Marauders' backer.

RELATED: The X-Men's Latest Betrayal Makes Apocalypse the Victim

Gateway may not be one of the most popular X-Men, but in a lot of ways he's been one of the team's most powerful allies since he debuted in Chris Claremont and Marc Silvestri's Uncanny X-Men #229. As a near-mute Aboriginal with deeply held religious beliefs the mutant seldom involves himself directly in the affairs of the world. When the X-Men first came to use him as an ally they even needed the mutant Psylocke to help them communicate, but even without the telepath's help, Gateway always knew where the X-Men needed to go.

Combined with an almost intuitive sense of where people want to go, there have never been seemingly any limits to Gateway's ability to teleport. Whether someone needs to go to the other side of the world, an alternate dimension, or a different time altogether Gateway has always been able to oblige without any ceiling on the amount of he can teleport at once or how quickly he can do so.

RELATED: X-Force Proves Why an X-Men Villain Is the True Guardian of Krakoa

Gateway was originally conscripted into working for the cybernetic mercenaries of the Reavers, who were based out of the Australian Outback. When the X-Men took the Reavers' base over, Gateway started helping them out and even facilitated Jubilee's introduction to the group. After making sporadic appearances in X-Men titles like Generation X and X-Treme X-Men over the next several years, Gateway survived M-Day with his immense powers intact.

After he survived the original Marauders' attempts to kill him, Gateway survived and went on to mentor Eden Fesi, who went on to serve in the Secret Warriors and Avengers as Manifold, one of Marvel's more noteworthy young heroes. In 2012's Uncanny X-Force #27, by Rick Remender and Phil Noto, Gateway was killed by Ultimaton, a mutant terminator who snapped Gateway's neck and immolated his body in a nuclear blast.

Since the X-Men developed a method to revive fallen mutants by copying their brains into cloned bodies in House of X, Gateway was naturally one of the first mutants who was revived.

However, Gateway's appearance here raises some questions that challenge part of the conflict at the series' heart.

With his powerful teleportation abilities one would think that Kitty Pryde's sailing band of mutants would be redundant, and that Kitty's own difficulty getting onto Krakoa would become a moot point. Gateway should theoretically have no issue teleporting Kitty or any mutants seeking refuge onto Krakoa all from the safety of Krakoa itself.

For the moment, the Marauders' presence on the open seas sends a strong political message to the rest of the world, and that may trump the immediacy of the teleportation option that Gateway presents.

While that can't be for certain, Gateway still represents something of an emergency escape for the Marauders and the rest of the X-Men, and the team likely has its own reasons for not over-using one of its most useful assets.

Batman: Arkham Legacy will allegedly be officially announced at the upcoming Game Awards 2019 ceremony. Rumors have been rampant regarding a new addition to the popular video game series, with a previous report noting that the entire Bat-family may be available as playable characters.

The news comes from YouTuber Coby - SLCMOF, who revealed that a source had informed him that the game would be announced during the Video Game Awards on Dec. 12. The YouTube channel will be hosting a stream addressing these leaked details, noting that "This information comes from the same guy that provided me with leaked images from the canceled Damian Wayne Batman game YEARS before they leaked to the public. He is very reliable, although nothing is 100% and the same goes with this scoop as we will discuss tomorrow."

RELATED: WB Games Continues to Hint at New Batman Game with Cryptic Teaser

Images and concept art from the aforementioned canceled Damian Wayne game were leaked earlier in the year and teased that Damian would have been the one in the Batsuit. Despite highlighting how no leak can be guaranteed, the YouTuber stressed that his source is incredibly reliable, giving him faith that Batman: Arkham Legacy is impending. WB Games and developer WB Games Montreal actively teased their fanbase this past September, hinting at a Batman game announcement.

WB Games Montreal's previous addition to the series was Batman: Arkham Origins in 2013, which served as a prequel to Rocksteady Studios' 2009 game Batman: Arkham Asylum. Other mainline entries in the series include Batman: Arkham City and Batman: Arkham Knight.

Iron Man: Scarlett Johansson Thought First MCU Film Was 'Groundbreaking'

Scarlett Johansson, a staple of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed what drew her to the franchise in the first place.

Johansson, who plays Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, had her interest piqued by 2008's Iron Man. "I just loved it," she told Vanity Fair. "I’d never really seen anything like it before. It was not particularly that I was a fan of superhero stuff or that genre, but it seemed groundbreaking. And I wanted to work with Marvel. It seemed like an exciting place to be."

Johannson went on to discuss her initial meetings with both Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau. While she admits she loved Favreauthe role of Romanoff originally went to Emily Blunt. "I remember being in a random hotel somewhere," she recalled. "And I got that call and I was so, so disappointed. And then that was it. You know, life went on. I mean, I’ve certainly had enough experience of rejection."

Blunt, however, was forced to bow out of the film, and the role ultimately went to Johansson. "I was super excited about it," she said. "And I met with Jon again, and we had a funny conversation about how he had not cast me. But I was excited. I was so stoked."

Although Romanoff sacrificed herself to help Hawkeye claim the soul stone in Avengers: Endgame, Johansson will reprise the role once more in the upcoming Black Widow solo film.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz. The film arrives in theaters on May 1, 2020.

One Piece Plots the Assassination of Kaido and His Court | CBR

$

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for One Piece, Episode 911, "Bringing Down the Emperor of the Sea! A Secret Raid Operation Begins!"

In the previous episode of One Piece, we learned about Kuri Town's past, where the daimyo of Kuri Town, Oden, brought order to the wild, untamed wastelands of the Land of Wano. That is, until Kaido and Orochi ganged up on Oden, bringing down the leader of this town and rebranding him as a traitor to the lands. However, his loyal samurai and sons -- the Akazaya Nine -- were sent 20 years into the future by Oden's wife -- who possesses the power of the Time-Time Fruit.

Now, in the wastelands of Wano, with the soils of Kuri Town intoxicated by poisons, it's up to the Straw Hat crew to overthrow Orochi and Kaido. But what does this plan entail?

RELATED: One Piece: The Straw Hat Crew Meets Time-Traveling Ghosts

When the samurai Kin'emon and his crew first arrived in the present-day Wano, after overcoming their existential fear of being in the future, he and his crew encountered the old retainers of Oden. They had waited for two decades for the "prophecy" of Toki, Oden's wife, to come true. In truth, Toki just told people that the samurai of Oden would return in 20 years, due to her using her Time-Time Fruit powers.

This led those loyal to Oden to conclude that they'd need to wait for the Akazaya Nine to return before they attacked Orochi and returned control over Wano to the rightful rulers. Those loyal to Oden have a Moon Tattoo on their bodies. However, the exact number of those loyal to the daimyo and his old guard remained unknown, which led Kin'emon and his samurai retainers to investigate.

O-Kiku infiltrated Kuri Town's culture, investigating both her allies and adversaries alike to gain intel. After all, the samurai had missed 20 years of history, which meant they had a lot to learn. In the meantime, Kin'emon, along with Kanjuro, Raizo, and Oden's son, Momonosuke, went out abroad to recruit allies.

The problem was, though, that on their way to reach Zou to find allies, they realized they were unable to sail, which pitted them against the likes of Doflamingo and, oddly enough, Trafalgar Law. Multiple enemies -- including Doflamingo -- are associated and affiliated with Kaido and his ilk. It was around this point, however, that Kin'emon first encountered Luffy and the crew, which led to the current events: the raid and liberation of Wano.

Regardless, Orochi believes the Akazaya Nine are dead, and that the prophecy foretells the coming of ghosts, not real men with real plots.

RELATED: One Piece: 10 Most Powerful Characters (And 10 That Are Just Useless)

Kaido's forces are massive. Kin'emon, on the other hand, has managed to recruit Luffy's Straw Hat Pirates, Trafalgar's Heart Pirates, the Mink Tribe (Dogstorm's Musketeers and Cat Viper's Guardians), and samurai from within Wano still loyal to Oden. However, it would be unwise to start a war at this point, because the forces they'd attack would be insurmountable. Instead, it's wiser to sneak around and covertly defeat the very heads of Kaido's forces one by one. It is vital to prepare a plan to behead each and every leader.

Their mission will take them to Onigashima, where Kaido and his heads reside in their base. It would take a cross-sea journey to get there, but it's so close it's visible from the shore. In order to raid the ship, they will need a ship. They plan on attacking it on the Fire Festival -- a grand party for the whole land. That day, Orochi will go with his procession to the island. Once he arrives, there will be a banquet for the heads of Kaido's court, at which they'll get the men drunk and decapitate them all.

They will depart for Onigashima at 5:30 PM on the day of the festival -- a message sent throughout Wano to those with crescent moons on their ankles. The flyers contain a secret message that only those who know the secret will recognize. Naturally, members of Luffy's crew are already hard at work at this: Usopp is handing out secret plans; Franky is spying on enemy formations; Robin is spying on the elites, while the rest of the crew will continue to recruit people for the plan in ways that best benefit them. Carrot and Chopper will go to Cat Viper and his crew to help them with their tasks. All of them will work in secret disguises, like Usopp, Franky and Robin have.

Kin'emon won't see his wife, the tea shop owner O-Kiku worked for, until after the mission is over, who O-Kiku kept a watchful eye on. In fact, until the event happens, they need to stay split up. There's one final detail, though: Kin'emon wants Luffy to recruit three specific samurai before the raid who will be of vital importance in the final battle, and they have only two weeks to make the raid work.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: 10 Best Fights In Battle Tendency | CBR

$

April, 1868: Jonathan Joestar passes away clutching the severed head of his foster brother, Dio Brando.

April, 1939: Joseph Joestar, now handless, crashes his own funeral because his wife failed to inform his family that he managed to survive plummeting from a volcano after shooting the Ultimate Lifeform into outer space.

RELATED: JoJo: Every Joestar, Ranked According To Strength

To say JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure changes between Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency would be an understatement. Where Jonathan Joestar lived by a code of gentlemanly honor, Joseph Joestar’s just here to have a good time, man. The perfect recipe for a character arc.

In both the anime and the manga, Battle Tendency is a huge spike in quality from Part 1. Better characters, better writing, and, best of all, better action. Phantom Blood sets the foundation, but Battle Tendency gives JoJo its voice.

10 Joseph Joestar & Rudol Von Stroheim Versus Kars

The Red Stone of Aja ends up playing a very similar role to that of the Stone Mask in Phantom Blood– though it’s worth mentioning that Part 1 and Pare 2 share quite a few narrative similarities. In the wake of Esidisi defeat, Joseph, Caesar, & Lisa Lisa find themselves face to face with Kars earlier than they had anticipated.

This fight sees the return of Rudol von Stroheim in action after his apparent death all the way back in Mexico. The fight itself isn’t too exciting as far as action goes, but it moves the plot along considerably and starts setting up Kars as the ultimate villain for the arc.

9 Joseph Joestar Versus Ultimate Kars

After establishing the Joestar secret family technique all the way at the start of the Part, Joseph finally gets his chance to bust it out one last time during the final fight against Ultimate Kars. Fully charged by the power of the Red Stone of Aja, Kars is completely and utterly unbeatable. Joseph has no choice but to run and formulate a plan on the way.

Kars’ intense hatred of Joseph is both entertaining and terrifying, placing JoJo in far more danger that he’d otherwise be. In the end, Joseph is able to outsmart Kars with some help from Stroheim, but it’s ultimately good luck mixed with human tenacity that saves the day: a fitting conclusion to Joseph’s story.

8 Lisa Lisa Versus Kars

Hirohiko Araki apparently wasn’t allowed to explore Lisa Lisa as a character as well as he liked, and if nothing else, it makes sense. Lisa Lisa is an incredibly interesting character with one of the richest backstories in the series, but she goes through Battle Tendency without doing all too much. To be fair, though, she does more than Zeppeli and does get to fight Kars on-one-on.

RELATED: JoJo: 10 Strongest Characters In Steel Ball Run, Ranked

It’s a short match that Kars wins (as expected since Joseph had yet to fight Kars one-on-one,) but Lisa Lisa does get a rare opportunity to show off her Hamon in action. Had Kars not fought dirty, she might have very well won. Her scarf makes an excellent Hamon conductor and her fighting style is visually more graceful than Joseph’s or Caesar’s.

7 Joseph Joestar Versus Kars

It’s interesting to note that the fight against Kars doesn’t necessarily get better as it goes on, but it’s not a bad fight. It moves in distinct phases, from Lisa Lisa, to Joseph’s fight, to Ultimate Kars himself. The middle chunk is the best of the lot, nice and lengthy while also showcasing Joseph’s strengths as a character. He outsmarts and nearly manages to defeat Kars.

Of the Kars fights, this is the only one that really feels complete and in-line with Joseph’s fights against Esidisi & Wammu earlier in the arc. Of course, Kars isn’t actually defeated and he uses the respite after the fight to place the Red Stone of Aja into the Stone Mask.

6 Joseph Joestar & Rudol Von Stroheim Versus Santana

Santana is Battle Tendency’s way of letting the audience know that Jonathan had it easy with Dio. The Pillar Men are in another league entirely, and Santana could have ended JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure early had Joseph and Storheim done literally everything in their power to not just survive, but kill Santana: which they fail to do.

The best they can do is turn Santana into stone, and Stroheim seemingly dies in the process. It’s a long, violent battle that stretches JJBA’s morbidity. The way Santana moves from body to body is nauseating, and his fight is overwhelming even knowing that Joseph will make it one in one piece.

5 Joseph Joestar Versus Straizo

To say that Straizo is much of a character in Phantom Blood would be disingenuous. Even in the anime, he mainly exists in the background and to kickstart Battle Tendency. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If anything, it makes Straizo’s role in the plot all the more intriguing, while making his Phantom Blood self more interesting in retrospect.

Joseph’s fight against Straizo also throws a Dio level threat at JoJo right out the gate, using the opportunity to showcase how Joseph isn’t like Jonathan. He isn’t regal, he isn’t noble, and his Hamon is sloppy. But he’s incredibly strong, incredibly smart, and will do the right thing under the right circumstances. Besides, any fight that opens with a surprise Tommy Gun is bound to be a good one.

4 Joseph Joestar Versus Esidisi

Ignoring the fact that Joseph finishing off al three Pillar Men is kind of lame (Kars is a special case), all of his fights against them are great, so props to Araki on that front. The fight against Esidisi is sudden, but it takes some genuinely insane turns while raising the tension considerably for the last act.

RELATED: 10 Strongest Close Range Stands In JoJo

Esidisi attacks right before Joseph’s final training session, essentially serving as JoJo’s final test. Joseph is able to outsmart Esidisi at literally every turn, even somehow predicting that Esidisi would try to outsmart Joseph outsmarting him. After seemingly losing, Esidisi uses his brain to possess Suzi Q, getting the Red Stone of Aja out of Italy before dying.

3 Joseph Joestar & Caesar Zeppeli Versus Wamuu

Home to one of the most iconic poses in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Joseph and Caesar’s joint fight against Wammu is nothing short of incredible. Like the fight against Santana, Wammu pushes the heroes to their absolute limited, hammering home how dangerous the Pillar Men are. Not just that, Joseph and Caesar outright lose.

Joseph has to negotiate with his life after distracting Wammu . Getting to that point is engagingly tense, though. JoJo busts out his Clackers and audiences get to see Caesar showing the fruits of Hamon against Wammu . It’s a great introduction for the Hamon/Pillar Man action that’ll dominate the rest of the part.

2 Caesar Zeppeli Versus Wamuu

If there’s one track in Battle Tendency’s soundtrack that best captures Caesar, it’s “Il mare eterno nella mia anime.” Sung by Kohei Yamamoto, the song is a tender farewell to Caesar Zeppeli and his lonely life. In the same token, few fights capture a character as well as Caesar’s fight against Wammu . It’s the perfect encapsulation of what his life has been building to.

Caesar isn’t afraid to give his life– perhaps foolishly– but he isn’t stupid enough to die without contributing. He very nearly kills Wammu through strategic use of his bubbles, and while he loses his life in the process, Caesar gives Joseph the antidote he needs to survive, and the determination he needs to defeat the Pillar Men.

1 Joseph Joestar Versus Wamuu

A fight to the death between champions. Joseph Joestar represents humanity and the Hamon users who fought so diligently against the Pillar Men. Wammu represents the top of the food chain, a being whose natural right is to consume those below him. Both man fight not for their nature or their history, but for the sport of it.

The first round of the fight sees JoJo and Wammu riding around a colosseum, outsmarting one another as they look for opportunities to attack. Wammu manages to knock Joseph off his horse, but JoJo is able to redirect Wammu ’s Holy Sandstorm, nearly ripping his arms off in the processed. Pushed in a corner, however, Joseph has no choice but to place what Hamon he has left into Caesar’s bandana, finishing off Wammu as a joint effort. Just the way their fight began in Rome.

The Haunting Betrayal At the Heart of A Walk Through Hell | CBR

$
0
0

In "Reason to be Excited," I spotlight things from modern comics that I think are worth getting excited about. I mean stuff more specific than "this comic is good," ya know? More like a specific bit from a writer or artist that impressed me.

Today, we look at the heartbreaking betrayal at the heart of A Walk Through Hell (spoilers, of course).

Last month, I was chatting a bit with new father Goran Sudzuka about his pick for my 31 Days of Horror feature and we talked a bit about his recently finished maxiseries with writer Garth Ennis and one of the things we discussed was just how important the expressions are in a Garth Ennis comic book, because at the heart of an Ennis work is how these awful situations affect the humanity of the people involved in the stories. In other words, for all the craziness and over-the-top nastiness in a Preacher or a Boys, the main purpose of these events is to see the effect it all has on the humanity of the people involved. Thus, as an artist working with Garth Ennis, you really have to know how to nail some nuance in the facial expressions of people or you're pretty much useless to him. The late Steve Dillon was brilliant at that and I thought Goran lived up to that high bar in his work on Walk Through Hell.

Walk Through Hell (which was written by Ennis, drawn by Sudzuka and colorist Ive Svorcina and lettered by Rob Steen) is an intentionally bleak comic book series. Like, REALLY bleak. In a lot of ways, it makes Ennis' Crossed look positively upbeat in comparison. So if that's not the sort of thing you want to put yourself through, then, by all means, avoid this series. However, I think that there is a lot to appreciate in just how well Ennis sets up the awful events of the series.

Spoilers, of course. The main plot of the series is that the Anti-Christ has arrived and he's here to do even worse things to the world than what has happened in the two thousand or so years since the actual Christ arrived. However, these things have rules and so the Anti-Christ's host body must be killed before the Anti-Christ can inhabit it and it has to be by someone who, on their own will and volition, felt that they were achieving justice by doing it (in other words, some toady of his couldn't do the killing).

The chosen host is a serial killer of children who is too well protected from unseen forces and things get worse when the FBI agents investigating him (Agents Shaw and McGregor) plant evidence in his home that is discovered by the killer (due to his protection from higher forces) and so that effectively makes him immune to FBI prosecution, as they're not on the record as having tried to frame him. Try to bring a guy down with THAT on the record.

So Agent Shaw decides that she's just going to take matters into her own hands...

This, of course, is precisely what was needed to free the Anti-Christ up to take over the body. So now everything's going to be awful and Shaw and McGregor are effectively stuck in hell throughout the entire series.

However, since the story is almost entirely told through flashbacks, we see Shaw often interact with her boss, Agent Driscoll, who is a mentor to Shaw and is the one person who believed in her when Shaw began her investigation into a serial child killer (and who knows what else he does to them) over many states.

Eventually, though, we learn that Driscoll had previously uncovered the conspiracy to protect the killer, but found that people she was close to would have been implicated (not to mention it would destroy her career), so she decided to sit on the information but then essentially manipulate Shaw to the point where she knew Shaw would go off and kill the bastard...

It's such a painful betrayal and it is one that Ennis takes so much time building up to (with the reveal happening in #11) that it is all the more painful when it comes. And obviously, as you can see above, Sudzuka nails all of the emotion built up in all of it.

It's just awful...but awful in a way where you feel it in an impressive, visceral way. It's still an achievement that I think should be honored. Ennis writes some bleak stuff, but he writes it extremely well.

Okay, this feature is a bit less of a reader-interactive one, as I'm just spotlight stuff in modern comics that specifically impressed ME, but heck, if you'd like to send in some suggestions anyways, maybe you and I have the same taste! It's certainly not improbably that something you found cool would be something that I found cool, too, so feel free to send ideas to me at brianc@cbr.com!

Fantastic Four: The 10 Saddest Deaths, Ranked | CBR

The Fantastic Four are one of the most interesting teams in the Marvel Universe. Due to the leadership of Mr. Fantastic, the team is frequently focused on science and exploration before being heroes. But that's not what sets them apart from other teams.

RELATED: The 10 Best Leaders In Marvel Comics, Ranked

They are, first and foremost, a family. Sue and Johnny Storm are siblings. Sue is married to Reed Richards with their kids involved in their adventures. Ben Grimm is so close to them that he's basically family. The problem is when they lose a member, it makes the loss that much harder to bear.

10 Mr. Fantastic and The Invisible Woman Fake Their Deaths

While no one actually died this time, it's almost more tragic because half the Fantastic Four thought the other half did die. After the destruction of the multiverse due to a series of incursions, Reed Richards started to rebuild everything. First, he had to deal with Battleworld's creator, Doctor Doom. He altered Doom's memories so that he wouldn't remember any of what had happened.

The plan was to then take Sue and the Future Foundation off into the new multiverse. Richards decided to leave Human Torch and The Thing behind, altering their memories to think the rest of their family was dead. Well, until Reed needed their help and had to call them. Awkward.

9 Johnny Needs To Clean His Room

Human Torch is generally regarded as the least mature member of the team, which is impressive since there are actual children around the Baxter Building. When his sister, Sue, was on a cleaning rampage one day, he did everything he could to avoid cleaning his room.

RELATED: Fantastic Four: 5 Uniforms That We Love (& 5 We Don't)

This unintentionally led to one of Reed's inventions being activated and releasing a monster that killed Sue. It was a shocking and sudden loss to the entire family. Unable to accept her death, Johnny used Reed's Time Platform to fix the mistake and save his sister.

8 Only Reed Survives

As the incursions became worse and worse, it became clear to the members of the Fantastic Four and the Future Foundation that their universe was doomed. Reed and his son Franklin began working on life rafts to keep as many people as possible alive. When the time came, they all boarded a life raft and tried to survive.

Unfortunately, the raft was damaged, killing all of Reed's family, extended and otherwise. He was the only member left standing. Reed would survive in Battleworld for the next eight years until he found the power to resurrect his family and the multiverse.

7 Human Torch's Sacrifice

Johnny Storm can be immature a significant portion of the time but he's often the first to stand up and do the right thing when the time calls for it. When the Cult of the Negative Zone breached the gate to the Negative Zone, they released a virtually endless swarm of Annihilus Insectoid Soldiers.

RELATED: 10 Heroes You Wouldn’t Think Are Smarter Than Reed Richards (But Actually Are)

Reed and Sue were out of the building, leaving Johnny, Ben and the Future Foundation members there to beat them back. The plan was to push soldiers through the gate, then lock it from the inside. Ben was ready to make the sacrifice when Johnny pushed him to safety and stayed behind. Annihilus killed him when he refused to open the gate.

6 The Thing Returns From Heaven

There's a theory that, all things being equal, The Thing might actually be immortal. Functionally, his rock form doesn't really change or age, meaning he might never die. Well, unless Doctor Doom blasts a hole in his chest or something. That did the trick, killing The Thing and breaking the team apart.

As is so often the case, Reed refused to accept his dear friend's demise. Using a version of Doom's afterlife machine, Reed led the team to the gates of Heaven where they convinced Ben to come back to the land of the living. It's honestly hard to say if they actually did him a favor on that one.

5 Doom Just Can't Let Things Go

You can use a lot of different words to describe Doctor Doom and stubborn is a big one. No matter the situation, it's almost impossible to get the man to change his mind or let something go unless he has a really good reason to. At one point, a monster was attacking his country, Latveria, and he needed help.

RELATED: 10 Times Doctor Doom Actually Saved The Marvel Universe

He turned to his oldest enemy, Mr. Fantastic, and his team. They helped but the battle left Doom mortally injured. With one last cheap shot, Doom blasted Reed and the two men died together. As sad as this was, it seemed fitting in a strange way that two sides of the same coin would die like that.

4 A Skrull's Choice

Long before the events of Secret Invasion, the Fantastic Four were having problems with Skrulls. One Skrull in particular names Paibok concocted a plan that would see a female Skrull names Lyja replace The Thing's longtime love, Alicia Masters. As time went on, fake Alicia ended up with Johnny Storm and eventually had to reveal herself.

Johnny was less than happy, having to be prevented from killing Lyja. When Paibok's plan came to fruition, Lyja was forced to choose between two parts of her life. Her love for Johnny won out and she died saving him from a blast meant to kill him.

3 Sue Loses A Baby

It's as bad as the title suggests. Pregnant and about to give birth, Reed realized that there were complications he couldn't handle. As such, he turned to Spider-Man's old foe, Doctor Octopus, for help. He's not necessarily the first choice or the best choice but you make do with what you've got. Supposedly, Otto was no longer the villain he once was.

Although he tried, Otto couldn't keep it together long enough to help. Sue would survive but the baby would not, leaving a devastated family behind to mourn the loss. Not all deaths for heroes in the Marvel Universe happen on the battlefield.

2 Doom Stands His Ground

As often as he stands against the Fantastic Four, Doom will stand beside them when the moment calls for it. After the apparent death of the Human Torch in the Negative Zone, Victor von Doom agreed to join the Future Foundation in exchange for Reed helping him regain his lost intelligence.

Doom never does a favor for free. As they searched the multiverse for various Mr. Fantastics, Reed-Alpha kidnapped him and ultimately conscripted him to fight the Mad Celestials. Instead of taking the opportunity to escape, Doom stood his ground and died defending the world.

1 Onslaught Kills Everyone

Born from the powers and collective experiences of Professor X and Magneto, Onslaught quickly became one of the most powerful villains in the history of the Marvel Universe. As the battle against him wore on, it became apparent that a sacrifice needed to be made by the world's non-mutant heroes.

This included the Fantastic Four, who used their bodies to give Onslaught mass the X-Men could attack. When it was all said and done, many of Earth's greatest heroes, and Doctor Doom, appeared to have died. In reality, Franklin Richards created an entire reality for them to survive in. The loss was still devastating at the time.

One Piece: 10 Fights That Might Happen In Wano Arc | CBR

$

The focus of One Piece lies in Wano Country. One Piece fans have been thoroughly enjoying the arc so far and frankly, it looks as if it could supplant Marineford as the best ever arc in the series. It has all the ingredients needed to become a great arc.

RELATED: 5 Characters Who Will Join The Straw Hat Grand Fleet (& 5 Who Won't)

One of the best things about Marineford was the wide array of powerful characters gathered in one place. The arc had many battles and it was simply amazing to watch them. Wano has plenty of characters on show which include two of the Yonko, several members of the Worst Generation, Wano samurai and tons of other characters. So, there is a good chance that we might see a lot of fights taking place at Wano. In this post, we will be discussing 10 fights that may take place in the Wano arc.

10 Roronoa Zoro vs King

Roronoa Zoro is the right-hand man of Monkey D. Luffy. Like Luffy, Zoro is a member of the Worst Generation. He is the second strongest member of the Straw Hat Pirates. Zoro has done nothing spectacular since time-skip, but that could change in Wano.

King is one of the All-Stars of the Beasts Pirates and he is second only to Kaido in terms of strength. King has an ancient zoan type devil fruit known as Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Pteranodon. King wields a sword, but he is yet to use it in battle.

This is one of the obvious matches that is going to take place in Wano. With Zoro receiving new swords, this could be a really interesting fight.

9 Vinsmoke Sanji vs Queen

Sanji is one of the members of the Monster Trio of the Straw Hats. He is the third strongest fighter after Luffy and Zoro. Contrary to popular belief, Zoro and Sanji are very close in terms of strength and the same applies to their opponents. Sanji is going to fight Queen in Wano and has received a powerup in the form of a raid suit, which he already tested out versus Page One.

Queen is one of the most powerful fighters of the Beasts Pirates. He has an ancient zoan type devil fruit called Ryu Ryu no Mi, Model: Brachiosaurus. Queen boasts of a bounty of over 1 billion beris.

It won't be an easy fight for Sanji by any means as Queen is nothing like his previous opponents.

8 Marco vs Katakuri

Marco is the former first division commander of the Whitebeard Pirates. He possesses Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix, which is a mythical zoan type devil fruit. Marco is currently at Sphinx, which is the birthplace of Whitebeard. Even though Marco has declined the offer to come to Wano, he might reconsider it because Weevil's pursuit of the Whitebeard Pirates has been put on hold due to the abolishment of the Shichibukai system.

RELATED: One Piece: 5 Things Zoro Does Better Than Sanji (& 5 Sanji Does Better Than Him)

Like Marco, Katakuri is yet to arrive at Wano. He fought Luffy at Whole Cake Island, but he was defeated. As we know that the Beasts Pirates and Big Mom Pirates have formed an alliance, Big Mom might recall Katakuri in order to bolster the forces.

7 Jinbe vs Jack

Jinbe, a former warlord, joined the Straw Hats at Whole Cake Island. He is a very strong fighter and he has displayed his abilities several times already. His current whereabouts are unknown, but he made a promise to return to Luffy and I doubt he'd break it.

Jack is the weakest of the All-Stars of the Beasts Pirates but he has got insane durability and stamina. Just like King and Queen, Jack too has an ancient zoan type devil fruit known as Zou Zou no Mi, Model: Mammoth. This matchup would make sense considering that both of them are fish-men.

6 Nekomamushi and Inuarashi vs Smoothie

Nekomamushi and Inuarashi have already proved in the Zou arc that they are no pushovers. Each one of them was able to fight Jack on equal footing. They were only beaten after Jack used Koro, which had been developed by Caesar.

Smoothie was barely involved in any fight at Whole Cake Island. She was a mere spectator, which was a big letdown. I have gone with both Inuarashi and Nekomamushi because they are not at their 100% now. After being defeated by Jack, they lost parts of their bodies. It is possible that they might use their Sulong form at Wano.

5 Luffy, Law, and Kid vs Kaido

Law and Luffy formed an alliance at Punk Hazard in order to bring down to Doflamingo and then eventually Kaido. The two managed to beat Doflamingo and bring his cruel reign to an end.

RELATED: One Piece: 10 Things You Should Know About Eustass Kid

Originally Kid was going to target Shanks, but Kaido's sudden appearance put a stop to his plans. Kid was imprisoned in Udon and Killer was turned into Kamazo. The three are in Wano and it doesn't look like Luffy is going to bring down Kaido on his own entirely. So, all three of them will fight him.

4 Oden's Retainers, Straw Hats, and Heart Pirates vs Orochi's Army, Beast Pirates, and Big Mom Pirates

There is no doubt that Wano is going to have a full-scale war. Both sides have a lot of powerful characters and it is going to be a mouthwatering brawl.

The outcome of this war will decide the fate of Wano, and the whole world is going to face the repercussions of this war.

3 Luffy vs Kaido

Although there is no way that Luffy can beat Kaido right now, it isn't entirely impossible as we progress in the story. It is inevitable that Luffy and Kaido are going to go 1v1 at some point in Wano again.

Earlier when they clashed, Kaido demonstrated his immense power by knocking out Luffy with just one hit. This won't be happening again as Luffy will undoubtedly become more powerful towards the end.

2 Carrot vs Perospero

This fight holds a lot of emotional meaning for Carrot. Back at Whole Cake Island, Pedro sacrificed his own life in order to help his friends. Pedro was like Carrot's big brother and his loss moved her.

Perospero was the one who had trapped the crew with his candy and it would be befitting if Carrot takes revenge for the death of her brother.

1 Oniwabanshu vs Nine Red Scabbards

The fight between the loyal retainers of Kozuki Oden versus the elite ninja team of Kurozumi Orochi seems like a very feisty matchup.

It would be very satisfying when the Nine Scabbards would beat Orochi's ninja squad. This fight will very likely take place towards the end of Wano.

When it comes to science fiction, anime is at the forefront for bringing new, exciting futures to our screens in captivating ways. From bizarre time-travelling adventures to impressive mecha battles to full-on space operas, nothing is off the table for these intrepid explorers.

Anime has only grown in popularity over the past decade, which means a myriad of new stories have been created to quench our thirst for more. With sci-fi opening up countless interesting storytelling opportunities, there has been an influx of new releases taking us to the furthest reaches of the galaxy. With 2020 around the corner, we thought we'd take a look at the very best sci-fi anime from the past 10 years.

RELATED: 10 Sci-Fi Anime That Redefine The Genre

10 Carole & Tuesday (2019)

Not all sci-fi is about battling aliens in deep space or exploring the cosmos in a trusty spaceship. This stunning series from Shinichirō Watanabe and BONES explores the impact living in an advanced AI world has on the arts and creativity.

50 years in the future, humans are living on Mars. When Tuesday Simmons runs away from her comfortable life to pursue music in the big city, she meets budding songwriter, Carole Stanley. The pair team up to compete in the AI-dominated music industry, hoping their feelings can influence their songs. It's a wonderful series with an incredible soundtrack. With the series' second half due to air on December 24th, it will be a great way to wrap up the decade.

9 Mobile Suit Gundam: Unicorn (2010 - 2014)

Gundam is one of the most iconic mecha franchises of all time, and justifiably so. This instalment explores the Universal Century timeline as quiet student Banagher Links' life is shaken up when he meets Audrey Burne. Audrey is in possession of a key which could open the "Laplace's Box," a device believed to have the power to alter the entire universe. Swept up in the adventure, Banagher pilots the new Gundam Unicorn.

While it might not be the friendliest entry point for new Gundam viewers, this series has everything a fan would expect from the franchise: stunning animation, epic action, distinct characters, and incredible mechas.

8 Orange (2016)

Based on Ichigo Takano's manga, this sci-fi romance is one of the most binge-worthy series of the last decade. Originally skeptical about receiving a letter from her future self, warning her about her "biggest regrets," Naho Takamiya begins to believe she might be able to reshape her destiny and save transfer-student Kakeru Naruse from a tragic fate.

Orange is a compelling exploration of regret and friendship. While the visuals are beautiful, they are contrasted by surprisingly dark undertones. Introducing a sci-fi twist to a shōjo romance adds a welcome spin on a well-worn genre, making for poignant and unique storytelling tackling difficult subjects.

7 Space Brothers (2012 - 2014)

When two brothers seemingly see a UFO in the sky, they vow to explore space one day. Years later, youngest brother Hibito gets the chance to make that dream a reality, having completed his astronaut training. Things aren't going quite as well for older brother Mutta. But change is around the corner as he joins the latest round of astronaut selection after losing his office job.

Space Brothers' story is simple, but that doesn't make it any less impactful. With realistic, relatable characters, this series is full of heart, comedy, and a genuine passion for space exploration. At its core, it's a series about pursuing dreams, no matter how out of reach they seem.

6 Space Dandy (2014)

Sleek, stylish, and entertaining, Space Dandy is a wild romp through the galaxy. With many of the creative minds behind Cowboy Bebop on board, including director Shinichirō Watanabe and producer Masahiko Minami, it's hardly surprising this series quickly became considered a classic. Infused with the team's excellent artwork and inventive score, it's a truly original show.

RELATED: 10 Classic Anime Every Newcomer Should Watch

Space Dandy travels through the cosmos with his robot vacuum QT and the alien Meow on board the Aloha Oe to hunt down classified aliens, often running into calamity along the way. Each adventure is more bizarre than the last, making it difficult to predict just where Dandy and his crew will end up next.

5 Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 (2012 - 2013)

1974's Space Battleship Yamato is without a doubt one of the most impactful sci-fi anime ever, being dubbed the Star Wars of Japan. Fans held their breath when the space opera was remade in 2012, worried it wouldn't live up to the original. Fortunately, Uchuu Senkan Yamato 2199 (or Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2199) is a wonderfully faithful update of a classic.

When earth's inhabitants are forced to evacuate, the Space Battleship Yamato and its young crew must transport the survivors through an onslaught of attacks to reach safe harbor on the planet Iscandar. It's a timeless tale of humanity and survival which explores the murky grey areas of morality, filled with memorable characters and beautifully updated artwork.

4 Psycho-Pass (2012 - 2019)

In the 22nd Century, the Sibyl System has changed the nature of law enforcement. Able to detect criminal intent by examining a citizen's mental state, Inspectors can prevent crime by arresting those who get negative readings. Akane Tsunemori is one such Inspector, but when she's partnered with Enforcer Shinya Kougami and discovers the Sibyl System's imperfections, she begins to question justice.

RELATED: Psycho-Pass: Top 10 Most Sadistic Villains, Ranked

Anime has a knack for tackling thought-provoking subjects in a gripping way, and Psycho-Pass is no exception. A compelling cop drama, it explores the complexities of human psychology and morality. Akane is an excellent protagonist and it's thrilling to watch the plot unfold around her. With subsequent seasons and films continuing to be released, it has become one of the most popular sci-fi franchises of the past decade.

3 Shinsekai Yori (2012)

Beneath the shiny surface of a newly built utopia lies many dark secrets. With some discovering they have telekinetic abilities, old power structures are overthrown and new ones created. Sage Academy, a school for psychics, is created for children awakening to their powers, and 12-year-old Saki Watanabe is about to enroll. Along with her new friends, they begin to discover the dark side of their seemingly perfect society.

Gut-wrenching and dramatic, this creative coming-of-age story follows five kids as they question societal norms. Don't let the crisp animation, bright colors, and young protagonists fool you, Shinsekai Yori is full of sinister plot and unexpected turns, with the suspense building expertly as the story progresses.

2 Steins;Gate (2011)

Steins;Gate is undoubtedly one of the most popular anime of the last decade, celebrated by fans and critics alike—and for good reason. What begins as a goofy comedy turns into a time-travelling thriller as self-proclaimed mad scientist Rintarou Okabe accidentally discovers time travel.

RELATED: 10 Anime To Watch If You Love Steins;Gate

The anime is hugely enjoyable, filled with distinct, likeable characters. The story is well-written, with a dramatic turn mid-way through the series kicking it into high gear. The time travel aspects have been carefully considered and well developed, which is a refreshing take on the often clunky trope. But it's the characters who are at Steins;Gate's heart, making their adventure all the more compelling. Hilarious and heart-breaking, it continues to resonate with audiences across the globe.

1 Your Name (2016)

Makoto Shinkai's Your Name is a stunning anime worthy of the top spot. Mitsuha Miiyamizu lives in the country but dreams of life in the big city, while city boy Taki Tachibana is juggling school and work. Finding themselves waking in each other's bodies, their lives become intrinsically linked.

Bursting with breathtaking scenery, gorgeous animation, and a perfectly suited soundtrack, Your Name cherishes Japanese traditions and culture. With loveable characters at its center, it's a joy to watch the story unfold.

The film made an incredible impact following its release. Not only a huge commercial success in Japan, becoming the second-highest grossing domestic film behind Spirited Away, saw worldwide success. Hollywood have even sunk their claws into it, with a live-action adaptation in the works. Whether they can improve on the original will be no small challenge.

X-Men: The 10 Worst Things Mutants Did To Humans | CBR

$
0
0

One of the X-Men's longest-held core values has always been to preserve life, mutant and human, friend or foe. Even in Johnathan Hickman's reimagined Dawn of X landscape, where the mutant-held Krakoa finally has some legitimate geopolitical clout, the governing Quiet Council still made "Kill No Man" one of three overarching mutant laws.

RELATED: X-Men: 10 Mutants Who Share The Same Power Set

But that doesn't mean that mankind has always been safe in the presence of the X-Men. In some cases, the humans deserved it; in others, bystanders became mutant-issued collateral damage. Here are 10 of the worst things Mutants have done to regular humans.

10 Archangel's Penchant for Executing Anti-Mutant Extremists

Close encounters with Archangel are not advisable for members of far-right fringe groups. in 1988's X-Factor #34, while locked in a hand-to-hand grapple with Cameron Hodge, Hodge questioned Archangel's stomach for the kill. One panel later, Hodge is suddenly headless, decapitated by the cold edge of Archangel's organic steel wing.

Fast forward to 2010's Second Coming event, when the X-Men were outnumbered in a scrap with the Purifiers. For expediency's sake, Archangel rained down steel feather missiles on the anti-mutant zealots before cutting Rev. William Stryker clean in half with the whoosh of his wings.

9 Magneto's Involvement in the JFK Assassination

In the X-Men movie continuity, if you can even call it that, 20th Century Fox dropped a huge conspiracy theory nugget in the marketing run-up to the release of 2014's X-Men: Days of Future Past by positing that Magneto was involved in the JFK assassination in 1963.

Using the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination as an opportunity to market a super-hero movie, a black-and-white faux-Zapruder film, dubbed The Bent Bullet, shows a still frame of someone that looks like Michael Fassbender's Magneto standing along the infamous Grassy Knoll as a motorcade drives by. According to the promo video (which can hardly be considered canon, but here we are), Erik Lenscherr was arrested and tried secretly for first-degree murder and conspiracy to assassinate the 35th President of the United States of America.

8 Fetus X's Attempted Sororicide

Charles Xavier tried to kill his twin sister in New X-Men #121 with a toddler-sized psi-burst while they were still sharing space in their mom's womb. How's that for making future family gatherings awkward? The psi-burst that left baby Cassandra stillborn should technically register as mutant-on-mutant crime, but imagine the trauma the whole experience wrought on the kiddos' poor human mother, Sharon Xavier.

RELATED: X Gon' Give It To Ya: 10 Characters Professor X Has Killed

The fetal Royal Rumble going on inside her tummy caused Sharon to miscarry Cassandra, or at least that's what everyone thought at the time. The baby's discarded body mutated in the sewers for decades. Eventually, Cassandra Nova became one of the X-Men's fiercest foes, albeit one who, in the face, had a certain uncanny resemblance to her more famous brother.

7 Wolverine's First Blood

In 2001's Origin miniseries, a young James Howlett walked in on an argument between his dad and a former employee, Thomas Logan. Logan's murder of John Howlett triggered little James' bone claws to extend for the first time, and, in a fit of rage, James ran Logan through. Only then did Wolverine learn that he, too, was a Logan.

As for his mother Elizabeth, this particular trauma was compounded even further by the miniseries' reference to three parallel scars running down her back, hinting at an older sibling of James' who also had claws.

6 Wolverine's Family Tragedy, Continued

If mistakenly killing one nuclear family member wasn't enough, decades later, Wolverine would unknowingly finish off five of his illegitimate children in an elaborate plot put into motion by a hooded group calling themselves the Red Right Hand. The Red Right Hand was made up of the loved ones of people whom Wolverine had killed, its members intent on revenge throughout an early run in Wolverine Vol. 4.

The Red Right Hand recruited five warriors dubbed the "Mongrels" to their cause, but knew none of them stood a chance against Wolverine in battle. When Wolverine dispatched them all and confronted the cult leaders, they were already dead, after poisoning themselves. In a sadistic posthumous video, the Red Right Hand told Logan that he had just killed five of his kids. The episode devastated Logan, who predictably retreated to live alone in the woods for a while.

5 Dark Beast's Killing Spree

Dark Beast occupies the Earth-295 timeline, a world in which Charles Xavier never forms the X-Men and Apocalypse eventually takes over America. Without Xavier's guidance, this Beast is an unmitigated monster but remains a scientific genius. In 1996's X-Men Unlimited #10, Dark Beast had been living in regular Beast's Earth-616 timeline for some time but hatched a new plan to come out of the shadows and assume the real Beast's life in his timeline.

RELATED: Ranking The Main Cast From X-Men: The Animated Series

Dark Beast worked to get close to the McCoy family, their old parish priest, Hank McCoy's old girlfriend and others who knew him as a youth, to get useful information out of them so he could continue the ruse. After Dark Beast gathered the information he needed, he killed them all, not only to tie up loose ends but also so that he could use the anger it produced in the real Beast to his advantage in the coming fight, which Dark Beast won.

4 That Time Namor Flooded Wakanda

Namor is one of the world's oldest mutants and committed one of his worst atrocities in the New Avengers 2013 run. See, the Sub-Mariner sided with the X-Men in that version of X-Men vs. the Avengers, and while on a field trip to the moon with Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magik, and Colossus, all five come in contact with the Phoenix Force.

In the ensuing conflict between the X-Men and the Avengers, the Phoenix-endowed Namor (now with red Phoenix pants!) brought the fight to Wakanda by weaponizing a lake and emptying it onto the advanced African civilization, trashing Black Panther's kingdom and killing thousands of innocent inhabitants.

3 Magneto's Golden Gate Bridge Attack

Returning to the X-Men's clumsy cinematic continuity, Magneto's attack on the Golden Gate Bridge in 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand featured some pretty large scale collateral damage.

Summoning his unparalleled mastery over the earth's electromagnetic field while hovering over stacks of backed up traffic, the Golden Gate first begins to sway, then rock, before Magneto rips it from the sea and drops it atop a nearby military installation. And what did the commuters do to deserve the early demise at the hands of the Master of Magnetism? They just so happened to be in front of Magneto in all that bridge traffic.

2 Captain Kate Pryde's newfound militarism

In Marauders #1 of the Dawn of X relaunch, Kitty Pryde insists on being called Kate, and her fighting moves are all grown up, too. In a skirmish on the other side of a Krakoan gateway to Russia, a swashbuckling Captain Kate front-kicks the rifle right out of the hands of one anonymous Russian goon and pops him one in the kneecap with his gun.

RELATED: 10 Times Kitty Pryde Was The X-Men's Most Powerful Character

But she makes the reader feel these idiots' pain when she phases that same rifle into the legs of two other hapless henchmen. When it solidifies, all the Russians can do is collapse and writhe in pain. Turns out, she's the perfect X-Pirate.

1 The Creation of Onslaught

The Onslaught saga was set into motion by none other than Charles Xavier. It's one of several glaring black marks on the wise professor's overall record. Xavier was so wrought with anger after Magneto zapped all the adamantium off of Wolverine's skeleton in X-Men Vol. 2 #25 that he probed Magneto's mind and shut it down. A byproduct of the melding of Magneto's mind with Charles Xavier's was the creation of the all-powerful combo-mutant Onslaught.

Onslaught's immense power drew a response from not only the X-Men but also from the Avengers and the Fantastic Four, whose members sacrificed themselves to kill Onslaught. Leaving the earth's human population without the protection provided by those two teams, it could be argued, is about the bleakest outcome for humans on a planet occupied by as many supervillains as Earth-616. But, of course, both teams were "reborn" in 1996-97's Heroes Reborn story arc, because, comics.

Marvel Brings Back the Venom Symbiote from the Ultimate Universe

$

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Venom #20 by Donny Cates, Iban Coello, Zé Carlos, Rain Beredo and VC's Clayton Cowles, on sale now.

A character who has made himself comfortable inside the pages of Donny Cates and company's Venom is The Maker, aka the Reed Richards from the Ultimate Universe. The Maker made a surprising debut in Venom #7 when he was revealed to be behind the imprisonment of Eddie Brock. This twisted version of Reed has called the Marvel Prime Universe home ever since the Ultimate Universe came to an end during the second Secret Wars event.

While Maker isn't the only Ultimate Universe survivor to pop back up, he has unquestionably caused the most chaos, making appearances in New Avengers and Ultimates. However, instead of terrorizing super-teams, Maker has set his sights on Eddie and his alien symbiote. His interest came in handy during the Absolute Carnage crossover event, as Maker used his superior intellect to create a device to extract the codex samples out of previous symbiote hosts.

Of course, it was revealed that Maker had no plans to destroy the codices -- instead, the villain intended to collect them for an unknown reason. The release of Venom #20 makes that reason crystal clear, but with that revelation comes another surprise with the return of a weapon from The Maker's home universe.

The Maker spends the majority of the issue talking to someone on a monitor screen. As Maker informs the mystery man about his observations regarding Eddie Brock's son Dylan, the topic of Project Oversight comes up. The name was first brought up when Maker tried to explain to Eddie who he works for, but at the time, he described it more as a gathering than an organization.

Project Oversight involves Maker's research into finding a way to safely travel between dimensional rifts, with the end goal of making it back to the Ultimate Universe. "It would seem the strain of multiple rift travels is... too much for the human mind and body," Maker says. However, though it is damaged, something was able to come through the rift from the Ultimate Universe during Maker's last attempt: the synthetic Venom symbiote.

The Venom symbiote of the Ultimate Universe was originally created by Eddie Brock and Peter Parker's fathers, Eddie Brock Sr. and Richard Parker. The fathers envisioned the symbiote as a method to cure the world of diseases, but their research ultimately led to their deaths, with the Venom project continuing at Trask Industries and Roxxon until Eddie Jr. and Peter reunited. Miles Morales would have several run-ins with the Venom symbiote as well, with it fatally wounding his mother.

We now know Maker's true reason for collecting the symbiote codex samples was to bond them to the Ultimate Universe symbiote with the hopes of repairing it. Unfortunately, all of those codices are now a part of Eddie and the Earth-616 Venom, but this is where Dylan comes back into play. Since he is a living codex -- a piece of the alien symbiote combined with a living human fetus -- he should, in theory, be able to repair the synthetic symbiote.

Just how Maker plans on orchestrating this plan remains a mystery for now, but as Dylan has shown us in Absolute Carnage #5, there may be no limits to his unknown powers. Also, if the Ultimate Universe symbiote was able to make it through a dimensional rift, who knows what else could have also traveled through the openings during The Maker's trials?

These events will surely continue to play out in Venom, but Miles will certainly have some strong opinions when he eventually discovers what is going on. Miles and Eddie teamed up against Knull and the Grendel in Venom, so a reunion looks to be in the making.

And why is The Maker so intent on reviving the Ultimate Universe? Marvel has teased its return since last year's C2E2, with Senior Vice President Tom Brevoort responding to a fan, "We’ll be vague and mysterious... there are always plans." The universe also popped up in the conclusion of Spider-Men II #5. It now appears those secret plans are bearing some alien fruit.

Scarlett Johansson Says She 'Mishandled' Transgender Role Reactions

2018 saw Black Widow actor Scarlett Johansson drop out of a movie following a critical online backlash over her casting in the fact-based drama Rub and Tug. The film told the story of Dante "Tex" Gill, a transgender man who ran a massage parlor in Pittsburgh during the 1970s and '80s that turned out to be a front for a prostitution ring. Before his death in 2003, Gill lived his life as a man and preferred masculine pronouns, and Johansson was primed to play the transgender character. However, while the actor was initially somewhat defiant over the reception, her opinion has since changed.

"In hindsight, I mishandled that situation," Johansson told Vanity Fair. "I was not sensitive, my initial reaction to it. I wasn't totally aware of how the trans community felt about those three actors playing—and how they felt in general about cis actors playing—transgender people. I wasn't aware of that conversation—I was uneducated. So I learned a lot through that process. I misjudged that…. It was a hard time. It was like a whirlwind. I felt terribly about it. To feel like you're kind of tone-deaf to something is not a good feeling."

When originally faced with the backlash, Johansson issued a statement highlighting what she thought of as hypocritical, selective criticism. She pointed to Amazon Prime's Transparent in relation to her casting, saying, "Tell them that [people with critcicisms] can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment." She would later pull out of the movie, issuing another statement that acknowledged the insensitivity of her initial comments and support for the trans community.

Johansson is set to star in Black Widow, a prequel movie set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that will take place following the events of Captain America: Civil War. Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson, David Harbour, Florence Pugh, O-T Fagbenle and Rachel Weisz. The film arrives in theaters on May 1, 2020.

As it turns out, Black Widow actor Scarlett Johansson knew about her character's ultimate sacrifice before she was given the script for Avengers: Infinity War, thanks to a phone call from Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige.

"Kevin Feige called me, as was kind of normal, just to discuss whatever the script was and what was going on. But I think he called me to tell me that," Johansson told Vanity Fair. "I was surprised, but I also kind of wasn't surprised at the same time. I think we all knew there were going to be some big losses."

Black Widow was one of the only Avengers who didn't survive the team's desperate mission to stop Thanos. She died during the events of Avengers: Endgame, saving Hawkeye in the process.

As a result, Black Widow will be a prequel set before Endgame. It will reportedly take place after Captain America: Civil War and will follow Natasha "Black Widow" Romanoff as she confronts her mysterious past.

It took Kaley Cuoco a While to Find Harley Quinn's Voice | CBR

It can be a daunting process bringing a beloved comic book character to life, let alone one as popular as Harley Quinn, who has a new adult animated series on DC Universe.

For Kaley Cuoco, who voices the titular anti-hero, finding the right tone and character for her version of Quinn was harder than she initially thought, with the actor eventually heading back to re-record earlier dialogue after discovering right balance later on in production.

"After a few weeks, it became more manic and hysterical, so I wanted to go back and re-record [the earlier episodes] to make sure it was just as badass from the beginning," Cuoco told TVLine. "I think with any character, especially when on a new show, it takes some getting used to. I've perfected certain looks and facial expressions over the years, so this in a way was harder — also because I'm voicing someone as iconic as Harley. And also, my voice is very recognizable, so I didn't want to force an accent or try to be someone I'm not. I'm 'Kaley as Harley,' and accepting that early on enabled me to me free and very authentic."

Frozen 3 Is Disney's Perfect Chance to Introduce a Gay Princess

WARNING: The following article contains spoilers for Frozen 2, in theaters now.

In the wake of Frozen, there was a huge online push to #GiveElsaAGirlfriend in a potential sequel, as many fans interpreted Elsa as a gay character. However, this hasn't panned out as the sequel hasn't given her a love interest; instead opting to focus on her journey of self-discovery and keeping the romantic tones for Anna and Kristoff.

But while a third movie isn't in the works just yet, once it does happen, it would be the perfect opportunity for Disney to break the mold and make a big step forward in terms of inclusivity and diversity by introducing Elsa as a gay princess.

It's a refreshing breath of air to see a Disney princess who doesn't need a man to save her or support her; one who has full agency. Elsa's a strong woman, proven by her becoming a queen of the Enchanted Forest by the end of this film, making the sequel an even bigger feminist statement than its predecessor. There's nothing about her that screams damsel in distress, transcending the days of Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and so on. So, wouldn't it be amazing for this pop culture icon to now become a fully-fledged gay icon?

This would speak volumes to young kids, especially girls, towards building education and awareness over LGBTQ issues. It'd also help those struggling with their identities to realize they have allies and that what they're going through is normal. In other words, Elsa would become could become an ambassador for the LGBTQ community in a time where we don't have many central figures in cinema who identify that way. It's still niche and kept for supporting characters mostly, so for Disney to adopt this approach, it would indeed show how progressive the company is.

The threequel is some ways away, so in terms of optics, when it does drop, it could be two to six years from now (six was the time gap from the 2013 movie, after all), so hopefully, by then the world might be an even more accepting place. It'd be more 'woke,' in that sense, so a gay Queen Elsa would fit right in. Considering there are many corners of the Internet (and even in the entertainment industry) where younger viewers could be miseducated on LGBTQ people, a gay Elsa -- if handled right -- would tastefully act as a positive statement for equality and social justice, and not, as some detractors might argue, a "corrupting" one.

The foundation's also already there. Elsa has no men in her life to fall in love and she's always been a rebel, constantly going against the grain. And who better to do this than Disney? This company can do no wrong in Hollywood, making billion-dollar films at every juncture. People thought a feminist Brie Larson would hurt Captain Marvel's box office and other bigots thought Black Panther would come off too preachy, yet they broke the bank. So, while there'd be trepidation that a gay Elsa could hurt Frozen's ticket sales, it's a misconception because the world wants to see more POC, more minorities and more gay representation.

By embarking on this, the company would be seeding threads and philosophies of acceptance from adolescence, and such kids could only grow up to be more loving, peaceful members of society. It's just all the more perfect that Elsa's actually the Fifth Elemental Spirit and the perfect avatar for Mother Nature. Seeing as she also has Honeymaren at her side, a brave, free-spirited and kind woman belonging to Elsa's mother's Northhuldra tribe, there's already an ideal soul mate there. They both had such powerful chemistry and the dynamic felt natural, even when they were subtly flirting with each other, culminating in Honeymaren holding her hand and telling her, "You belong out here." We could easily see this extending beyond the platonic realm as Honeymaren understands Elsa's mystical nature and believes in freedom.

All Disney has to do is be bold and chart new territory because this frontier of equality and love will only fortify its brand as open-minded, worldly and one that wants to shape a better, brighter future for us all.

Disney's Frozen 2 reunites directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck and producer Del Vecho with voice actors Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Jonathan Groff and Josh Gad. Returning musical talents include Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez.

Star Wars: Ewoks May Return in The Rise of Skywalker | CBR

Star Wars shared a short behind-the-scenes featurette encompassing the entire Skywalker Saga ahead of The Rise of Skywalker, and one blink-and-you'll-miss-it shot could indicate another original trilogy character (or characters) is making their return.

At the 2:43 mark, we see Warwick Davis in his Wicket costume reaching for his Ewok mask, with the costume visibly covered in salt-and-pepper fur to signify the in-universe passage of time. This is preceded by a b-roll shot of Carrie Fisher and an 11-year-old Davis on the set of Return of the Jedi, making it easy to spot the differences between the two Davis'.

Ewoks, of course, were a hit with children when they first appeared in Return of the Jedi, spinning off into an animated series and their own live-action movie. The Rise of Skywalker, meanwhile, will presumably tie all the loose ends of the episodic films and offer fans the chance to give a final goodbye to beloved characters. Should J.J. Abrams follow in George Lucas' footsteps and make the third episode of the third trilogy "rhyme" with the other movies, including Ewoks certainly makes sense.

Furthermore, Rey, Finn, Poe, Chewbacca and C-3PO will be traveling to the ruins of the Deathstar II on the ocean moon of Kef Bir. That said, the forest moon of Endor, where the Ewoks are from, must have been pretty close by, as that's where the Rebels shot it down in Episode VI.

Grant. The film arrives on Dec. 20.

Batman Swapped With Catwoman in Arkham Knight Is Pure Nightmare Fuel

The Internet has done the unspeakable to Batman: Arkham Knight.

A gamer uploaded a video on YouTube that's been modified so that Batman and Catwoman's skins are swapped. This gives us the hellish and hilarious image of an increasingly sexy Batman, in possession of Grey DeLisle's sultry voice, in stark contrast to the stoic Catwoman speaking with the deep tones of Kevin Conroy.

Video game mods can often be an easy source of comedy (take the Harry Potter mod of Grand Theft Auto or the Teletubbies version of Left 4 Dead 2), but rarely has a simple switch caused such an easily entertaining romp. The video is about 10 minutes long and includes both gameplay and cutscenes (including an extensive one at the end, which features Catwoman in her classic TV Julie Newmar costume).

Batman: Arkham Knight was released in 2015 to both critical and commercial success, capping off the excellent run of Arkham games that began with Batman: Arkham Asylum 6 years earlier. Arkham Knight would prove to be the last main game in the series before making way for Batman: The Telltale Series and Batman: The Enemy Within. Nevertheless, it's nice to see fans are still finding ways to squeeze new enjoyment out of the popular franchise.
