SPOILER WARNING: This article contains major spoilers for "Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part 1," the first installment of this year's Arrowverse crossover.
In a shocking turn of events, Oliver Queen died in the first installment of "Crisis on Infinite Earths."
The main action of "Part 1" took place on Earth-38, where Lyla Michaels' Harbinger assembled a motley crew of heroes: Oliver, his daughter Mia, Supergirl, Superman, Batwoman, the Flash, White Canary and the Atom. There, they fought to protect the Monitor's quantum towers, his first line of defense against the antimatter wave. Nevertheless, it fell and Supergirl's Earth was destroyed -- but not before they evacuated three billion people to Earth-1.
Realizing the fight was lost, the Monitor began to send the heroes away, to save them from the destruction. However, Oliver refused to go until he could save everyone. He hit the Monitor with an arrow, stunning him for a moment. Soon, Oliver ran out of arrows and faced an army of shadow demons all alone. By the time the Monitor recovered, it was too late. Oliver was injured beyond repair.
The Monitor transported Oliver back to the bunker on Earth-1. He appeared on a gurney, his face and hair matted with blood. "He fought till his last breath, knowing every moment was another life saved," the Monitor told the other heroes, who had gathered around Oliver in concern. "I calculate one billion souls survived due to his noble sacrifice."
"This is my destiny," Oliver whispered. "Barry? You, my friend, are the very best of us. I gave it all up for you and Kara... I need the two of you to be the ones to save us now."
With that, he turned to Mia, his daughter. "Mia, don't forget to find your mother, find William, and tell them how much I loved them," he said. "I love you, Mia. You keep me in your heart, okay?" She nodded, and then he closed his eyes and passed away.
"It was not supposed to be like this," the Monitor confessed to the shell-shocked heroes. "This is not his ending I foresaw."
"Things are turning out differently than I expected," Pariah agreed. "But one thing is certain: everything we know, everything there is and everything there ever was is doomed."
Before he died, Oliver also named his successor: Mia. When she was called to participate in Crisis, he pulled her over to the side and gave her a uniform of her own. "There should always be at least one Green Arrow," he told her, moments before the shadow demon army attacked. "You earned it."
The Monitor told Oliver he would die during the Crisis all the way back in the Season 7 finale. He recruited the vigilante to help him prepare for this moment by helping him make a weapon, which turned out to be Harbinger. Considering the circumstances around Oliver's death have changed, that may all be moot now.
