Dandere is another "dere" term that is very prevalent in the dictionary of anime fans everywhere. Usually, no matter where you look in the anime world you'll find a character that can be described with this simple word. But what is a Dandere, you ask?
Well, a Dandere is a character type that is timid, cold, and introverted and is usually not the type people like to associate with. However, when someone they actually enjoy being around is present, they open up and what you'll find is usually an intelligent, kind, and pure person. If you're unfamiliar with a character like this we've got you covered with this list of the top 10 Danderes in anime.
10 ATSUSHI MURASAKIBARA
Starting off the list is a Dandere that many may not even have known is a Dandere. Atsushi is a character from the sports anime Kuroko no Basket and one of the star players for Yosen High's basketball team.
He's also a character whose appearance and first noticed personality may fool you. He's tall, sluggish, seems very angry, and very quiet but he's the type to give you some true and pure words when he enjoys your company. Even though it seems like he doesn't care about anything but candy.
9 AMI MIZUNO
Sailor Moon's own Sailor Mercury is checking in at number nine on this list as one of the greatest and oldest Dandere characters in anime. Ironically enough with her being the second introduced on this list, she was also the second Sailor Scout introduced in the series as well.
Ami used to be a very shy girl that wasn't good at making friends, using her time to read alone instead. That was until she met Sailor Moon herself, Usagi, and then a more sweet and innocent side came out and everyone's opinions changed from thinking she was a smart snob to knowing she was a loving girl.
8 NADEKO SENGOKU
Nadeko of the Bakemonogatari series is as Dandere as they come. Throughout the series, she headlines six different story arcs and is front and center with her Dandere tendencies.
What are her Dandere tendencies, you ask? Well, she's a very shy girl that keeps her feelings inside rather than out. Not to mention she is very protective of her body as she'd rather not be touched, this is an even bigger case when it comes to her hair. Later in the series, she develops feelings for the main character with whom she gradually feels more comfortable sharing her inner feeling.
7 MIKURU ASAHINA
Mikuru is a very shy and quiet girl that Haruhi has classified as the "moe" girl of the S.O.S Brigade. What she means by this is that Ms. Asahina is the cute and innocent girl of the group and if she isn't hitting the nail on the head nothing is.
Mikuru is the textbook definition of Dandere, as she's usually very quiet and always showing her shy side for everyone to see. She's clumsy and easily embarrassed making it hard for her to talk to her crush Kyon. The fact that she has to keep it a secret that she's a time traveler from the future can complicate those conversations as well.
6 CRONA
Crona of the Soul Eater series definitely has to make this list as they are Dandere to a T. Crona is a very introverted and negative character putting themselves below any and everyone they come in contact with. Due to their introvert nature and shy personality, they aren't able to deal with constant bullying that comes from their weapon partner Ragnarok.
This all somewhat changes when Maka opens her hand in friendship to Crona, letting them know they don't have to be alone and can confide in her. Afterward, Crona opens up little by little making more friends along the way.
5 SAWAKO KURONUMA
Sawako of the Kimi ni Todoke series is one of the most popular Dandere characters in anime. She is a girl that easily gets nervous with a very all-around timid nature. This case takes effect even more when you add in the fact that she looks like the girl from the movie The Ring and makes a creepy face when she gets embarrassed.
Sawako really just wants to make friends and her shyness just keeps getting in the way of that. Once she does find friends however, she really opens up and shows everyone that she is one of the cutest characters around.
4 TSUKIMI KURASHITA
The lead character of the anime Princess Jellyfish is an otaku with a huge fear of being social. She's especially awkward around very attractive people which can really be a problem when working with a model.
Tsukimi is the most realistic Dandere character in anime and manga and really gives you a look at how a person of this personality type would act IRL. She has low self-esteem and constantly calls herself ugly while having no clue of how attractive everyone else thinks she is. While she doesn't like herself much, she is as sweet to others as they come.
3 RIKKA TAKANASHI
Rikka is not only the most popular anime chunibyo of all time, but she is also one of the most popular Dandere characters of all time. She is under the belief that she is a sorceress possessed by the "Tyrant's Eye" which is why she wears the eyepatch. She is dramatic and very open with the fantasy she believes she's living.
She is also easily flustered when she is brought back to the reality of being a normal person because once she is removed from her fantasy she becomes a very reserved girl. That is until she gets put in the presence of her crush Yuuta.
2 MIO AKIYAMA
The calm and collected bassist of the popular band Ho-kago Tea Time, Mio, may just be one of the most Dandere characters of all time which is why she's the runner up on our list. She freaks out at even the thought of everything she fears, is as delicate as they come. She may seem very cold but that's just because she's shy.
While she may hide this side to most, she is a friend that will come through for those she loves no matter what obstacle or situation presents itself.
1 HINATA HYUGA
Hinata is likely the most well known Dandere of all time and we're sure being the wife of one of the most well known shonen protagonists out there has something to do with it. Hinata has been there since the beginning, usually masking her obvious feelings for Naruto in plain sight.
Only someone as dumb as young Naruto wouldn't be able to notice those feelings, but that's beside the point. Hinata is the queen of the Dandere and rightfully so. Even when she's already married to the man, she's still pretty shy around Naruto.
