Footage from the upcoming Black Widow movie at Comic Con Experience in São Paulo revealed that Red Guardian/Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour) was indeed married in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but fans of the comics are in for a surprise.
According to Omelete and other sources, footage exclusive to the event confirmed Alexei was married to Melina (Rachel Weisz). There's no indication the footage revealed he'd ever been married to Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson), as they were in the comics.
Created by Roy Thomas and John Buscema, Red Guardian made his debut in 1967's The Avengers #43. The character served as a Soviet counterpart to Captain America and was married to Black Widow, though their union ended when the KGB lied that he'd died in a rocket explosion.
First appearing in 2010's Iron Man 2, Black Widow served as a mainstay in the MCU for the Infinity Saga. She died during the events of Avengers: Endgame, sacrificing herself to retrieve the Soul Stone from Vormir. Black Widow is the title character's first solo movie and the inaugural installment of Marvel's Phase 4, which will also feature such movies as The Eternals and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour as Alexei aka The Red Guardian and Rachel Weisz as Melina. The film opens May 1, 2020.
